Our weaknesses and tendencies while composing documents are clearly revealed in the tutorial. As we compose work that frequently relies on the ideas of others, the benefits of understanding our tendencies are indispensable while avoiding plagiarism. Personally, I have decided to capitalize on summarizing and direct quotations, while marginalizing my use of paraphrases. I believe that summarizing requires more analysis of the sources intent, allowing me to effectively continue to strengthen my analytical skills. When registering for this class, a wave of worry ran through me, because I had minimal skill when it came to writing, particularly in the field of formal writing. The high school I attended was academically poor, we never wrote formal papers, just informal book and movie responses. Therefore I was apprehensive about this class. This course was quite intricate, but I attend skills that will aid me for the rest of my academic career. Rhetorical knowledge, critical inquiry, process, and conventions are all concepts I have acquired.
I had a wonder semester in LSIS 4505. The three things that I learned during this course is how to make a lesson plan, what books are banned and challenged in different districts, and bibliotherapy books. It takes times to make a lesson plan. Sometimes your lesson plan does not always go as plan. When my teacher first assigned this, I was nervous because this was my first time making one.

ASAM 100 has been one of the most insightful classes I have taken in college—so far! Through this class, I was able to learn a great deal about my culture and about myself as a person. In retrospect to my first “Why ASAM?” essay, I still believe that it is important for everybody to learn about their culture sometime throughout their life. I was able to learn about various topics such as: the issues of my culture, the traditions of my culture, how others view individuals of my culture, and more. Throughout this class, I learned about the Model Minority Myth and its effect on individuals of Asian background, I learned about issues that other Asian Americans faced through the video, Asian American Voices, and I learned to grow as a writer.
“They’ll turn us into writing robots”, a student contends against the use templates influencing the structure of their essays. (10) In the book “They Say/ I Say”: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein insist that the use of their relevant templates provide tools that will enhance the readers writing skills. These templates provide an exemplary format that one can use when writing an essay. Graff and Birkenstein suggests that, “Instead of focusing solely on abstract principles of writing, then, this book offers model templates that help you put those principles directly into practice.”
Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
The 214 English hybrid course has got me into thinking more about constructing a strong thesis and creating solid topic sentences. Being able to identify my thesis has also helped my writing have better organization that helps the overall flow of my essay. With blogging incorporated into our academic criteria it was certainly something different. Blogging geared me into reading more articles and analysis the authors use of rhetorical devices. After this course I have gone more on magazine websites to read current topics.
I have learned if there is an opportunity for a greater contribution in life, go for it. I am interested in pursuing a place in English 1102 due to my work ethics and my interests in analytical and argumentative writing. In my past three years of high school, I would only take the high level classes in order to challenge myself, but I never knew the true meaning of being in an honors class until I started attending East Mountain. My incentive to be in multiple honor classes started my freshman year. When I started attending East Mountain I experienced an immense amount of reading assignments compared to a regular class, but it didn’t stop me from doing my best.
Everyone needs to struggle in order to preform better. Writing has always been a strength of mine, but I found it a challenge to move from the high school, six-paragraph essay format that I had grown accustomed to. Throught the course of this semester, I was able to acquire many different skills in ENG 1101 that have helped me transition into more complex writing. These include various writing techniques, MLA formatting, writing for purpose, convincing my arguments and finding and properly using sources. The portfolio I have submitted is comprised of three works of writing that I completed for ENG 1101 over the last three months.
Tawney Nodland – As I look back over the past semester of English Composition, I realize that I have grown as a writer. Not onlyhas my understanding of the writing process changed, my whole attitude towards composition has too. This composition course has made a significant impact on my learning experience and has given me tools to take forward into my future educational and professional goals. Throughout this course, I have discovered things about myself as a writer and know some of my strengths and weaknesses. I now feel more prepared for future writing assignments, whether for work or for school.
English 1121 has helped me to become an enhanced reader and writer. I now have confidence in my writing and reading abilities. I never realized that I could become a good writer. A tremendous amount of effort was put forth into each of my papers and I asked questions whenever I was frazzled. I strived for success.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
My journey in this English 3001 course during the past ten weeks, and over the course of taking is English class I have grown and learned more that I thought it is necessary for me to know as a student. I have improved in my overall writing skills because if you look at my second in-class essay and the rest of my essay you will see that I have made progress and improvement compare to my diagnostic essay and the first in-class essay. Moreover, now that I have completed the English course my skills are better that I am capable to meet the university standard writing requirements. This English course additionally taught me how powerful the composed word and language can be. This quarter my ability to compose essays and express my thoughts, ideas,
The method of research, citing facts, and brainstorming ideas was very intense in this class. Reading various arguments debating the topic I want to write on, was very challenging and time consuming. In this reflection essay I want to show how researching process was vital on changing my writing style. Also, what I’ve learned in English 105 class after a great summer semester with lots of material to learn from. Researching was drastically important, making every paper I made heavily based on research.
