Hemingway was born July 21, 1899. He was born in Cicero, Illinois. He was raised by two parents, Grace and Clarence Hemingway. He grew up in a very conservative part of Chicago. His family also visited Michigan many times, because they had a cabin up there. While in Michigan, he learned to fish, hunt, and appreciate the outdoors more. This is probably a reason for some of his views on masculinity. When Ernest was in high school he was part of his school newspaper. He wrote primarily about sports in high school. This was the beginning of his long career in writing and journalism. His next stop on his journalism career would be the Kansas City Star. This allowed him to gain experience for future endeavors. Then, he accepted a job at the Toronto Star. Eventually, he became a foreign correspondent to the Toronto Star and moved to Paris. This is how he met the now famous Gertrude Stein. He was part of what gertrude Stein called “The Lost Generation”. Gertrude mentored young Hemingway and introduced him to many famous people. He met artists and writers that also happened to be in Paris at this time. This includes F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Pablo Picasso and James Joyce. This was around the time that his son was born and he began going to the festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain. That is where the couple met some expatriates that went with them to the festival, this was the start of his first novel, The Sun Also Rises. He also wrote many other novels such as A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea. He won the pulitzer for The Old Man and the Sea in 1953. He also won the Nobel Prize a year later in 1954. Hemingway was a huge adventurer and was big into: big-game hunting in Africa, bullfighting in Spain, and deep-sea fishing in Florida.
