Why in a world that we live in today is the crime of identity theft such a big problem? While identity theft appears to be a problem with the technology age, the truth is that the technological era only brought it to life and made it easier to accomplish. Much more common forms of identity theft include getting vital information from your mailbox, trash, or a stolen wallet. If someone has ever thrown out a pre-approved credit card application, old bank statement or any official form that person has provided a thief with all the information needed to steal their identity. This is easily avoided by simply shredding all your mail before throwing it out.

In light of the fact that identity theft does not seem to be a big problem right now, it is an important crime to the individuals who have been affected by these crimes. Causing them to prove they have not used the money, or made the purchases themselves before they are returned their money. Also sometimes causing them larger problems such as not being able to purchase a home until they are able to remove the negative credit from their personal credit report.
