It can be just another normal day for you, but that can change in an instant. You can be sitting there working on your studies and all of a sudden you hear a loud bang. Suddenly, everyone engages into panic-mode because they realized what happened. A fellow student has walked through the doors and started a shooting spree. All it takes is one student to walk through the doors of a school and open fire to prove how cruel humanity can be. One of the many reasons that cause school shootings is bullying. Being bullied can have terrible effects, both short term and long term. It can cause students to physically hurt themselves by “cutting” (slitting their wrists repeatedly) or resorting to substance abuse (NICHD). Another after effect of being bullied is what mental damage the victim may sustain. Students who were bullied often had poor performance during school, headaches, and poor self-esteem (NICHD). The victims are not the only ones who are affected by bullying. Children and adolescents who are the bully are at an increased risk of academic problems, substance abuse, and violence to others later in life (NICHD). One of the most common assumptions is whether or not the shooter was mentally ill. Take the case of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting for example. The shooter, Adam Lanza, was diagnosed by the US media with schizophrenia days after the incident (Metzl et.al). Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects about one percent of the population and shows symptoms including delusions, lack of motivation, hallucinations, and trouble with concentration and thinking (APA).
