Its no secret that every country has historical moments that help mold and build it into what it is today, politically and socially. The first historical movement that comes to mind for many Americans is the Civil Rights Movement. Although it may be one of the most memorable moments in history for the majority of people, it is often written about in a way that suppresses the importance of the movement. It is important to not confine the events of the CRM to those that happened just in the south, or those that occurred within a specific timeline because all events assisted in molding the movement into what we should remember it as today. Slavery in the North never approached the numbers of the South, due mainly to the climate and economy, although it was still occurring in the Northern states. Eventually the Northern colonies began to offer slaves freedom in exchange for military services; which came with a reimbursement to the owner. As a result of this change, the Northern colonies one-by-one began giving up slavery while the Southern states continued to remain active. A slave’s life was different in the North; it offered more freedom and more hope for the future than the southern states did as more low paying jobs became available for African Americans in the North. It seemed as if the Northern colonies recognized its mistake while the Southern colonies perpetuated it.
