I remember being a tiny little third grader at her first theatre camp at the high school. I remember feeling a mixture of emotions, mainly because I was a shy child who had yet to come out of her shell, but I was immediately welcomed to the inviting family that theatre is. A group of high school students made me feel extremely welcomed and helped me through all the dances and scenes along the way. That week at theatre camp, I learned so much, not just about the theatre program, but what it meant to be apart of it. That group of high schools students that took the time to break a shy, little girl out of her shell instilled a new love in my heart that still burns today: my love for theatre. Whether it be under the direction of the Davis’, Chet Dreschel, or Wendy Edwards, I have found myself working with children and helping them find themselves through theatre as I did. I encourage them, advise them, and try to welcome them to make them feel the comfort that theatre provided for me. I hope my leadership to these children has inspired them to stay in the theatre arts program, and while I have inspired children in theatre, I feel just as inspired by them as they do by me. Last year I had the honor of playing the older Jenny Hill in our spring musical, Big Fish. The girl who played the younger Jenny inspired me to be more of a free spirit onstage; in fact, she taught me how to think outside the box and make character decisions I wouldn’t have made on my own. She displayed the confidence and positivity that is vital when performing onstage. She inspired me to be a more confident performer, and working with her reminded me of the time when a group of high schoolers made me feel confident and welcomed to the stage. Both instances inspired me to continue in my love for theatre, and I can only hope I make half the impact on children that some of these children have made on
