Attention Getter: Imagine this. You’re at a party with your closest friends, having an amazing time. You and your friends have been drinking a little bit, and one of your friends definitely had too much to drink. But don’t worry, they’re not planning on driving. You call your friend an Uber, and safely send them home… or so you thought. Despite the safety precautions that were taken on your friend’s end, someone out there did not take the same precautions, and decided to drive drunk, crashing into the car that you sent your friend home in (AA-PATHOS).

Let me start by informing you all on the nationwide legislation to reduce drinking and driving.
a. As previously mentioned, the illegal BAC limit is .08 g/dl, and if one is caught driving with a BAC at or above this level, they will receive a DUI.
2. Despite the widespread laws, enforcement intensity varies from state to state.
a. This is due to the fact that State and Community Highway Safety grants, which are used to fund traffic enforcement, differ from state to state. Meaning that, the states with more funding enforce against drinking and driving more than states with less funding (PA). The information was found from a July 2016 article published in Addiction.
3. Overall, studies have shown that increased enforcement does not reduce the amount of drinking and driving accidents.
a. According to a July 2016 article published in Addiction, they found that, there is no strong correlation between increased enforcement and a reduction of impaired driving (PA). This means that even though funding is increased and more arrests are made, there is no significant reduction in drinking and driving offenses.
