Comparing the Classical and Dialogical Approach

The basis of Cheney’s (2010) Classical approach is established by decision making, where people have individual choices to make, therefore they are held accountable for every decision made. This approach has three ethical systems, virtue, consequentialism, and duty. The virtue system practices moral behavior and seeks to be conscious and persistent, in order for morality to be a part of our character (Cheney, 2010). The assumption is to learn and engage in deep comprehension beyond the surface of things and become motivated towards good intentions that could transform journalism. This approach sees people’s obligations arise from the relations they have with other people and their community (Cheney, 2010).Within this method, there are three ethical systems that focus on communication and communal practices, being the discourse, feminist, and communitarian systems. In discourse, the main focuses is on the dialogue between people (Cheney, 2010). By having a dialogical form, people in communication or a community may learn to be aware of concerns and different opinions other than their own. This leads to common ground between groups. The feminist system focuses on experiences of the people and their culture (Cheney, 2010). The reciprocity and the care of people are seen as the essence for this system and emphasizes that the main role in making a decision should be based on nurture and empathy (Cheney, 2010). Communitarian as the last system focuses on the assumption that identities are found through social areas, such as, sociocultural values and meanings that can be constructed through dialog with one another (Cheney,
