As a woman, a huge fear of mine is becoming pregnant when I am not ready for children. Although I take precautionary measures, I know it can still happen. Every Canadian woman should have access to free and safe abortions in Canada. Not every pregnancy is planned and it should not be forced on people if it is unplanned. Access to free and safe abortions allows these women to continue with their lives without having to worry about finances and babies.
Thankfully, abortion in Canada was legalized in 1988, although there is still a lack of access to safe abortions. Many women throughout the country still have to travel long distances in order to terminate their pregnancy. Women living in rural communities are forced to travel to large urban centres such as Toronto, to have access to abortion services.
Providing women with free access to abortion services would help women who face difficulties such as being unable to cope with an unwanted pregnancy. Not providing women with safe access to abortions will not stop them from getting abortions. The risks of safe and legal abortion are minimal in comparison to the dangers of living without access to a safe abortion.

Many women attempted to terminate their pregnancy by themselves, often resulting in death. During this time, approximately 19.7% of all deaths in Ontario were caused by botched abortions. By giving women access to safe abortions, less women will have to die due to unwanted pregnancy.
