Effects of the African American Civil Rights Movement in America

As Malcolm X once said, “A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything” (Brainy

Quotes). This describes the exact mindset of the people fighting for equal rights in America in

the 1950’s-1960’s. Many people took charge in the actions in achieving equal rights like

Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. They were the main leaders during this time called the

African American Civil Rights Movement. The African American Civil Rights Movement

changed racial bias because of its great impact on citizens, towns, and government.

Many citizens at this time dedicated their lives to achieve equal rights for everyone.

Most protests were loud and nonviolent so they could get

their message across without being put into legal trouble. In the end this all worked and the

people received equal voting rights. This didn’t only affect the citizens, it also affected the towns

they were living in.

The African American Civil Rights Movements effected towns greatly. Many towns

boycotted buses because they couldn’t have the seat they wanted (Civil Rights Movement). For

example, the New York race riots of 1964 (New York Race Riots). Some towns even let people

stand up and talk about what they feel they deserved. For example, Washington D.C. let Martin

Luther King Jr. stand in front of many citizens and speak about what must be done and inspire

people to stand up for their rights (Martin Luther Kings I have a dream speech). This was mostly

peaceful but it sometimes didn’t turn out to well. These riots created so much turmoil

everywhere that it caused government officials to step in and take part in the mess.

At this period in time many government leaders made this topic their main concern
