Books are a way for people to explore their world and other worlds. Books are either window books where you see into another world or mirror books where you see it reflect something in your life. While children in elementary schools in America have access to books, books are beginning to be censored. (Context). Want to become an elementary teacher, and this topic is important to me. (Point of View). Children learn so much through reading, not only do they learn vocabulary words and grammar but also learn about other cultures and themselves. (Information). They learn words and grammar but also about other people and cultures. They learn about the world in which they live and about worlds on the other side of the planet. There is so much information that is learned through reading and children can explore worlds not just about other cultures but also explore worlds that reflect them and their lives. There are two types of books, windows and mirrors, in each, they show the reader a story and these stories, depending on the background of the reader, are either a reflection of themselves or a story they see through lenses. “Books are a portal to different life experiences and reading encourages empathy and social-emotional development.” (Banned Books – Top 3 Pros and Cons). Having books in the school libraries that reflect all students and also show all students other worlds is important for students whose minds are growing. “Books offer a reflection of our own stories and a chance to see ourselves differently. This idea of censoring the students from being able to choose freely what books they want to read are concerning. Students should be allowed to walk into a library and choose which book interests them the best. “Censorship denies our freedom as individuals to choose and think for ourselves.” (Read a Banned Book). (Information). By challenging books and taking them out of the libraries in schools, the students are denied the right to pick freely their books. Instead, the books are being picked for them and it is censoring what they can and will not see. The students find on the shelf books that people had picked not to ban which can cause issues since most books that are being banned have a storyline dealing with minority groups. (Clearness). “Books that are frequently challenged contain content about diverse populations, such as Black, LGBTQ+ or other minority groups.” (Brawley). This pattern shows that most parents are wanting to shut down their children from reading about minority groups. (Assumptions). It is unfair for students of these minority groups to walk through a library and not find books that represent them and showcase a main character who looks or has the same background as
