Even with all the new technological advances concussions are still increasing every year and this is a major concern for contact sport leagues like the NHL and the NFL. You would think that with all the new technology and protocols that the amount of concussions would be significantly smaller but that is not the case. Concussions are up 500 percent in youth sports since 2010 and have not been slowing down. The NFL has received more backlash about this topic than most other league because there have been many suicides by former NFL injuries due to CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). There is the theory that we have always had this many concussions but we just did not know because of the lack of technology which is somewhat true. We always have had concussions but definitely not this many. Every year athletes are getting bigger, faster, and stronger and the hits are as well. As time goes on athletes will always be getting bigger and stronger because they will do anything to win. “There are 1.9 million children in the United States with sports related concussion annually” (Rains). Concussions are rising and will continue to be a growing concern until companies that make sports helmets and sports leagues can solve this issue.
