Tragedy of Desdemona
William Shakespeare is a literary genius, writing a tragedy in which Othello is forced to believes his wife is cheating on him simply by the opinion and voice of others around him. In The Tragedy of Othello by William Shakespeare, a man named Iago is out for revenge against Othello because Othello gave Iago’s position in the infantry to another man. Iago also thinks Othello slept with his wife. To get revenge, Iago manipulates Othello into believing that Othello’s wife, Desdemona cheated on him which drives Othello mad he in return and kills her. The three people who are involved in Desdemona’s death are Desdemona, Othello, and Iago. Desdemona is innocent because she is killed and there was no indication at all that she ever cheated on Othello. However, Othello is innocent because he was manipulated by Iago to kill her. On the contrary, Iago is guilty for Desdemona’s death because he manipulated the situation to portray that Desdemona was cheating on Othello with another man. Desdemona knows she’s going to die so she tells Othello, “have you mercy too! I never did offend you in my life; never loved cassio but with such general warranty of heaven as i might love: i never gave him token” (V. II.58-61). Desdemona, even with her last breath knowing she did nothing wrong says it was her fault. Desdemona says it’s her fault for her own death because her love for Othello is so strong even through her death to the last moment of her existence in the play. Desdemona with her last gasp of air answers Emilia question on who killed her by screaming “nobody I myself. Farewell! Commend me to my kind lord: o farewell!” (V.II.23).
