Many tend to be against embryonic stem cell research because they do not truly understand what the process entails. Embryonic stem cell research should not be viewed as unethical or abominable, but rather inventive and beneficial. There are endless reasons as to why embryonic stem cell research should be looked at in a positive way, one being the benefits the cells provide to those who are suffering from a variety of different illnesses. Also, embryonic stem cells have an abundance of possibilities when compared to adult stem cells. Lastly, the pursuance of further information while researching could provide the medical community with answers to questions that have been desired for decades. One of the most popular opposing positions on embryonic stem cell research stems from the belief that the process of retrieving the cells is virtually the same as abortion. This belief originates from lack of information and true fact about embryonic stem cell research. The embryos that the stem cells are taken from are at the oldest, three to four days old. When the embryo is less than fourteen days old, it has yet to develop neural tissue (Shapiro). Many argue that taking the stem cells at this point is the equivalent to retrieving an organ from a person who has been declared as brain dead. Abortion is the process of taking a developed fetus and killing it. Embryonic stem cell research doesn’t even involve a fetus. It involves an embryo, which has absolutely no specialized cells or tissue at the time of the retrieval of the stem cells.
