The foster care system is a tragic mess. The foster care system is where children are taken from there home when there parent or guardian is unable to take care of them and they are owned by the government. The system currently consists of kids being taken in and out of homes, social workers having a large work amount, and lacking the appropriate training that foster parents need. For example, “There are several reasons why children enter foster care; physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, medical neglect, incarceration, abandonment, truancy, death, or voluntarily placed. Most of the time people only get involved in foster care just for the money.” (Red). It all starts with the government. The government doesn't hire enough social workers so the social workers that are hired are working countless hours stressing, overwhelmed, and exhausted. Social workers have to keep up with the complex workload the have, children they take care of, court appearances, home visits, and home study evaluations. From a recent article …show more content…
For example, “For the people that are only in it for the money most of the time hardly buy their kids clothes, toys, and treat them like second class citizens” (Red). The steps to become a foster parent consist of orientation and application, training, and homestead. Step one is orientation and application which is when you arrange to meet with someone, discuss what is needed, and ask any questions you want. Then you fill out an application and they do a simple background check. The second step is training, which teaches you CPR, First-Aid training, and inform you of tools and techniques when dealing with children. The third and final step is homestead. When this happens, your house gets inspected and makes sure your house is appropriate for a child to stay in the home. They also provide home inspections periodically. You only need three steps to become a foster parent.
