The Current Issues of the United States Gun Policy Gun policy is popular among the political agendas in the United States. Almost every American has an opinion on gun control. The news has frequently announced that the record for the most causalities for shooting occurs. I want to talk about the controversy about background checks and hand to hand deals of guns. Crime rate does not diminish when guns are taken away. Further, Bad people will still be able to obtain guns if there are laws preventing ownership of guns. If the government seizes guns from its citizens, then they would be encroaching on the constitution, specifically the second amendment. On one side they call for an outright ban of guns. While, others say it is the American’s citizens fundamental right to own guns. This is stated in the second amendment. With the increasing mass shootings, the government needs to preserve the safety of the public and enforce stricter gun control.
In Australia, the government called for the destruction of all their guns. This occurred after a mass shooting in 1996 (Glover, 2017). A young man killed thirty-five people using semiautomatic weapons (Glover, 2017). Both parties were in agreements in increasing gun control and the citizens supported it (Glover, 2017). 660,959 firearms were handed in (Glover, 2017). This showed the people were willing to give up their guns. Since the ban of guns, Australia has not had a mass shooting. A solution to this issue would be that the citizens would all agree to carry a concealed firearm. This would allow everyone a chance at defending themselves if anything occurs. This would prevent mass shootings because the shooters would be discouraged by knowing that everyone could fight back. Additionally, the gun sales would increase allowing the government to make more money from taxes. However, this would make mass shooting even more deadly because it is chaos during them.
