In the late 1990s and early 2000s three determined lawyers fought to gain legal recognition for gay marriage in Vermont. The state of Vermont controlled the case and only allowed residents of Vermont to voice their opinions. Pastors argued that homosexual behavior is a “desecration of which we are as human beings”, and anti-gay activist protested holding signs that read, “Judgement Day is coming”. Backlash toward the idea of homosexuals having an opportunity to marry one another connects one aspect of the radical feminist; humanity. Sexual orientation is the third highest motivator for hate crimes; it includes 17% of total attacks. Race based biased is first at 51% of total attacks followed by religion containing 32%. Examples of hate crimes against people are murder, assault and even intimidation, because through liberty you should be free from oppression imposed on persons’ “life, behavior and political views”. The Human Rights Campaign’s research regarding “Hate Crimes and Violence against LGBT People”, informs its audience that opponents of gay equality (a civil rights issue) blame physical hate crimes on public displays of affection. If you are perceived as being LGBT you may be targeted. Even though homosexuals have a right to be married, they are likely to be targeted. In fact, intersectionality plays a part here too. The Human Right’s Campaign also uncovers that people are targeted in “race, sexual orientation and ethnicity, and ability”. If you are a Black LGBTQ person, you are even more likely to be targeted.
