In the current era, incivility appears to have taken on the definition of bullying or even physical violence toward others. However, incivility is much more than attempting to directly harm another person. Incivility is any act of being rude, belittling, hostile, and certainly insinuating or engaging in bullying and physical violence toward others (Catalano 422). The acts of not allowing another person to express an idea, or ignoring a person who may need help are both acts of incivility. For people who are training to become nurses, which is a profession based on helping others, there is no place for incivility, whether in the classroom, the clinical setting, or a lab. The question that must be considered from a personal standpoint is how to work with others to overcome incivility in the classroom, clinical setting, and lab. There are times when a direct action or intervention is needed when acts of incivility are noticed on the part of others. One way in which to help others overcome incivility is by recognizing the cause of the incivility, and then attempting to reduce or eliminate the cause (Catalano 423). For example, a student may begin to become angry with his or her lab partners because a task was performed incorrectly. Upon noticing that the student is upset, reducing the incivility might involve talking to the student and explaining how the problem can be overcome, or even encouraging the student or the entire lab group to take a five minute break to regroup and return to tackle the task.
