The Life of Pi is a book that talks about how a boy survived a terrible accident. It focuses on religions as a highlight for the reason he continued onward. He survived an adventure of being lost at sea with a tiger named Richard Parker. It is a story of how one’s faith can change and save them. Piscine devotes himself to three religions. His family and religious authorities disapproves. However, Piscine intertwines: Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam to praise God. Along the way he learned many interesting things from each religion, did not see the conflicts that most saw with the three religions, and discovered the ideals behind rites and rituals. There were many lessons from each religion including his original religion, Hinduism.
The most interesting thing that I think Piscine learned from his Hindu tradition was the amount of ways to celebrate gods. He truly found peace in the way the Brahmans work. He was amazed by their stories of power and glory. “That is God as God should be. With shine and power and might. Such as can rescue and save and put down evil” (Martel 55). He is angry that he would die, but then he realizes that love caused all of his suffering. He accepts the unending and merciful love from God. The most interesting he learned from Islam was the mass amount of respect that is due to God. He learned about the respect that each person dues to God. “It felt good to bring my forehead to the ground. Immediately it felt like a deeply religious contact…‘If you take two steps towards God,’ he used to tell me, ‘God runs to you!’” (Martel 61).
