The epidemic of overweight Americans is increasing. According to Douglas Main in his Article for Newsweek “7 out of 10 American adults are obese or overweight” nearly 35% of Americans are overweight. Being overweight that means that they have a body mass index between 25 and 29.9. Now if you are a woman who stands at five feet and four inches you need to weigh less than 145 pounds to not be considered overweight. It is common in your everyday life to see at least one person who in your own eyes you consider overweight. Now, with it being such a common occurrence why are overweight individuals, most importantly women still so alienated from society? From having to shop at different stores, to being portrayed differently in social media and even in Hollywood there are a lot of struggles that are not only health related that go along with being overweight. We can see this when it comes to shopping for clothes and on the big and littles screens of movies and social media. The treatment of overweight women is not fair and from what I have noticed and experienced as a plus size woman in America this is because they are not in compliance with what society finds beautiful or normal. They are pushed to the side because being overweight is taboo. Being overweight is correlated with being unhealthy and if you are unhealthy then you are not beautiful. That way of thinking needs to change. There needs to be more representation for and from the plus size community, we have to all help each other thrive and become versions of ourselves that we consider healthy, there should not only be one type of healthy.
