Obesity vs. Civilians
Americans cannot afford to be healthy, and they cannot afford to be called obese either. In order to to maintain a healthy life style, it takes a lot of commitment and discipline. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be tough while balancing school, family, jobs, and a social life. Hours are taken away from you day-to-day and the average American cannot afford to lose that time just to get a work out in.
More than 35.7% of adults consider to be obese in America. More people should obtain a healthier lifestyle. By not doing so, Americans are leading the nation to obesity when it can be prevented. There are plenty of ways one can exercise for free, but the cost to keep one motivated and consistent is around $57 a month at any local gym. A gym membership is easy to include to your budget, but studies show that 67% of members do not even go to their gyms.
In a 2010 magazine from Atlantic Monthly from Beating Obesity, Marc Ambinder states “... As the obesity rate continued to rise, 68 percent of American adults were overweight, and 34 percent were obese; roughly one in three children and adolescents was overweight, and nearly one in five was obese. Americans now consume 2,700 calories a day, about 500 calories more than 40 years ago.” (1) Over the years the obesity rate has slowed down, but no one knows why. The difference between obesity and being overweight is if the person has too much body fat. A body mass of 30 or higher is considered to be obese and overweight is defined a body mass between 25 and 29.
