In America, a lot of us love food! Food is essential because it gives us nutrition and energy for our bodies to properly function. However, the biggest problem that we as Americans face is obesity. Obesity is a disorder that involves excessive body fat, and can lead to health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and death. In order to lower the number of people affected by obesity, many programs are now implemented. In recent years, obesity has become a world-wide epidemic. So much so that political leaders saw fit to begin implementing changes within the sectors of our restaurants, schools, and grocery stores. It reported that children, more specifically adolescent males, who consume 1 or more sodas per day, have associated risks with obesity. Sugary drinks contain 300 calories and do not offer any nutrients. It was also reported that children who watched more than 3 hours of television per day were more prone to obesity. Based on the reports, children who had access to televisions in their rooms were more likely not to eat with their families.
