In recent times the topic of gun control has been a more prevalent topic in the United States. It is a controversial issue that has been debated for years. Events such as the shooting in an elementary school in Connecticut and in a Colorado theater at an early morning screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" have persuaded many government officials to support gun control laws. Even with their differences in mind, these mass killers shared one quality with each other and with every other American besides: easy access to deadly weapons. These shootings were a catalyst for an uproar in the demand of stricter gun control laws. Pro-gun control advocates believe tougher gun control laws could ultimately deter these statistics as a whole. Background checks can help keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them. Americans for Responsible Solutions, supported by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her astronaut husband Mark Kelly, advocates for background checks to prevent criminals, domestic abusers, and seriously mentally ill people from buying guns. The group says laws requiring background checks have prevented the purchase of guns by nearly 2 million people who should not have had them. On January 8, 2011, U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and eighteen others were shot during a constituent meeting held in a supermarket parking lot in Tucson, Arizona. Six people died in this tragedy and this is just one of many accounts of mass shootings in America. Recently, a gunman entered a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, and started firing. Police named Robert Lewis Dear as the suspect in the attacks. Three people were killed. One of the more known events was when a gunman forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. and shot and killed 20 first graders and six adults. Among these incidents of mass shootings where multiple people have been killed or injured there are thousands of accounts of individual shooters who just randomly shoot people in the streets in everyday life.
