Professional identity is an important factor to have. As you become a counselor, when you are talking with the clients, you will tell them what you can do, what you cannot do, what they expect out of you. Professional identity is what you have learned and will learn while you complete your master’s program. It is about understanding yourself and your profession. When I think about my professional identity, I think about why I chose this field, and how I can make an impact on someone's life
Differences in Two Counseling Specialization I chose to specialize in Mental Health Counseling. Mental Health Counselors are counselors who deal with individuals or groups with mental issues. My role as a counselor is to help individuals or groups with coping skills so people can live their lives as normal as possible. I am going to focus on setting goals for individuals and work towards that goals to help them deal with everyday stress. As counselors, we find ways to redirect their emotions and set goals for individuals. There are different specialties in counseling that have the same approach but they differ in some ways. What stood out to me about the AMHCA that will help contribute to my professional development is their leadership in helping mental health counselors succeed in today's world (AMHCA, n.d.). ACAC, what I notice is that they provide education on training for counselors who work with children and adolescents as well as make aware of the understanding of them (ACAC, n.d.). There are many professional associations that contributed to one’s professional development but these two I feel that contribute to my development because it focuses on the area I want to work
