In chapter 7, I found the concept of punishment to be most intriguing. Punishment is a part of operant conditioning which was theorized by B.F. Skinner. Punishment is often confused with negative reinforcement. However, the main difference between the two is: while the goal of reinforcement is to increase the likelihood of a behavior, the primary goal of punishment is to reduce the chances of the behavior it follows. In 1938, Skinner concluded that punishment produces only temporary suppression of behavior but later research found that effects may be permanent.
Thus, authority figures such as a psychologists or psychiatrists are so important in this type of case. They would be the best at helping someone cope with these circumstances by guiding them as they overcome this obstacles a union. Just as a coach is an expert in training, a medical professional specializes in helping patients with their healthcare. And so, authority figures play a big role in channeling them through the obstacles they face by contributing to their growth as
Having a personal interest in understanding human nature and behavior made the subject of psychology an appealing topic to study. During the course of my undergraduate education, various specialties were considered: theories of personality, abnormal psychology, and human sexuality, just to name a few. This broad exposure to the field of psychology at Colorado Christian University has only piqued my interest further. The final class, PSY 485A Psychology Senior Seminar, covered an assortment of practical considerations such as employment opportunities for a degree holder of psychology, ethical issues, and pursuing graduate level studies.
I personally enjoyed every chapter that we have learned to date. If I had to pick my favorites, I would choose chapter seven and thirteen. I found these the most interesting because I enjoy learning about the brain itself, how memory works, and the disorders that occur. I find that the brain is the most unique aspect of the human body. Each brain holds millions of memories and ideas that are special to each person, and I find that beautiful.
Chapter seven covers the list of black psychologists who broke barriers and help paved a way to inspire other black people to achieve their dreams. It also covered the achievement about black scholars at Howard University who majored in the field of psychology. This chapter became one of my favorites out of the book because it highlighted all the excellence that black people work hard for to get where they are so that we can have a better for life for ourselves. After I read chapter seven, I felt very inspired by some of the people that were highlighted like Charles Henry Thompson because it motivated me to graduate college and get my bachelor’s degree in psychology so that I can be able to pursue my career. Reading about all the achievements of black psychologists in the chapter was the standout moment for me because if it wasn’t for those people I wouldn’t be the man who I am today.
Walden Clinical Psychology Program Enrolling into an academic program that emphasizes professional training is important for real life preparation. This preparation is responsible for establishing competencies, or “Elements of competence (Kaslow et al., 2004) that are observable, measurable, containable, practical, derived by experts, and flexible” (Kaslow, 2004, p. 775). This “movement” was publicized in the “Competencies Conference: Future Directions in Education and Credentialing in Professional Psychology, held in 2002” (Kaslow, 2004, p. 774). This established the foundation for 12 competency domains and training, based on the developed level of competency (Kaslow, 2004, p. 777).
1. Utilizing the course textbook, there are a total of five lessons that are presented throughout the chapter. The first of these lessons is regarding the traditional themes that were once displayed throughout psychology; this can be subcategorized into three aspects. The concept of the mind-body problem, both biological and social factors, and the concerns that contribute to theory and practice. Since the controversy of the mind-body problem is so evident throughout psychology in general, a suitable person who would contribute to this lesson would be Searle and his studies regarding subjectivity.
For my Capstone Project I will be shadowing Mr.Borkowski to learn about what it’s like to work as a psychology teacher. The reason why I became interested in shadowing our schools psychology teacher is due to the fact that, after taking the “Intro to Psychology” class in school this year, I became infatuated with the subject. Everything about the subject interested me greatly, from the theories of how humans develop, methods of conditioning a person to react when exposed to a certain stimuli, etc. so I decided to do my topic on the career path of a “Psychology teacher” as my topic for this project. This is due to the fact that, this will allow me to learn more about what a career path is psychology will look like and what type of work is required
Psychologist administers hope to those having difficulty understanding themselves and the way they feel. I believe this is the perfect career path for me by reason of helping others to understand themselves and cope exceptionally is an unbelievable feeling that brings joy to me. The career in psychology seeks to define unexplainable human emotions, behavior, and thoughts. They conduct many different examinations of scientific research and the functioning of the brain.
A typical day as a School Psychologist would be students coming into their office asking for help with school or problems they are having with friends/family. It is the psychologists’ job to listen and help the students the best they can. Not only do they help with student’s social issues, they also see if certain students have learning disabilities, and help treat behavioral issues like anger management, depression, and ADHD to name a few. A School Psychologist works with the family to make sure the student is right on track and helps solve any problems they have at
My research will be done based on the Chapter 12: Stress, Health, and Coping in Discovering Psychology the sixth edition by Hockenbury & Hockenbury. This chapter caught my eye since stress is something that affects everyone, possibly in their everyday life. I believe it’s important to note how stress plays a role in life. The current problem is just that: how does stress affect our physical and mental health? This is an important concept to study and understand so we as individuals can try and minimize stress and lean how to better ourselves depending on how stress affects us.
Mental health counselors get into detail of each and every problem, and the reason which leads their clients into the problem. They did think about the patients support system, habits, depression, or any unusual event happen during patient’s lifetime.
A Course Assignment That Has Had the Most Impact on Me The course that had the most impact on me, was my Developmental Psychology course, and it wasn’t just one assignment, it was the entire course. I did this course while I was pregnant with my son, and it taught me so much. I learned about what to expect at each stage of child development, and I actually got to experience each stage first hand. I learned about what was normal and abnormal behavior for a child as they advance through various stages of development, and was able to use these lessons learned with my own child as I watch him grow.
While psychologists spend most of their time working with the patients psychologists often teach either students psychology or teach patients how to work through their problems. While
Not only do counselors work with individuals, they also have the opportunity to work with families. Mental health counselors help families resolve complications between each other, and influence them to create stronger connections. Some mental health counselors choose to work with specific populations such as children, older people, or college students (Cherry, Mental).Therapy is much more than just sitting down and listening to someone’s issues. It is never easy at first, but overtime people see that it gets easier opening up to the counselor. Mental health counselors do many things.
