My research will be done based on the Chapter 12: Stress, Health, and Coping in Discovering Psychology the sixth edition by Hockenbury & Hockenbury. This chapter caught my eye since stress is something that affects everyone, possibly in their everyday life. I believe it’s important to note how stress plays a role in life. The current problem is just that: how does stress affect our physical and mental health? This is an important concept to study and understand so we as individuals can try and minimize stress and lean how to better ourselves depending on how stress affects us. This experiment is set up to test and see how stress affects people’s health and if there is such as thing as “good stress” or weather all effects are negative. From …show more content…
We will start by defining the independent variables. The variable in which will be manipulated will be stress. You might ask how do you manipulate stress? The subjects selected to be in the experimental group will do this by getting a big project to do or be apart of for their job. On the other hand the control group will be doing their regular job of a normal, everyday, workload. Next will be the dependent variable. In which the behavior measured will be the stress levels of the subjects in both the experimental and control group. The Independent and Dependent variables will be presented to the participants by random selection based on the group they are assigned to. The independent variable of stress will be manipulated by the work load of the subject in which will be by weather or not they are apart of the big project. The participant will receive instructions given by another randomly selected person so we try to keep the experiment blind and free of bias. The instructions will only be given to the experimental group and will describe what needs to be done for the project and the deadlines. Their behavior will be measure two ways. All subjects of the experiment at the beginning of the trial will be given a self-evaluation in survey for in which they will rate their stress from 1-10 in regards to their home life, personal life, and work life. The second would be by a trained …show more content…
The participants of this experiment will be ages 18-28 with a selection of male and female subjects. In each group we will have roughly 40 people, in which 20 will be male and 20 female. Of each 20, ten will go into the experimental group and ten into the control group. Once we narrow down the age criteria at the area of employment, participants will then be separated by gender. Each gender list will be numbered and random numbers will then be selected. The first ten randomly selected numbers for each gender will be assigned to the experimental group the last ten will be control. You can do this as simply as using a graphing calculator and doing randInt (1, however many people you have for that gender, 20). There are a few other factors we need to remember and take into consideration for is the age group. During these ten years there are many changes going on with different stress issues in peoples lives. Being in college brings on stresses such maintaining academic success, dealing with homesickness, building new friendships, balancing social life, handling roommate drama, and managing financial burden (HubPages). Many people get married during this period of time that can build up newlywed stresses such as time management, in-laws, financial issues, interaction patterns, ad the division of household tasks (Online Encyclopedia of Family
