Secure attachment or insecure attachment? For most people their instant interpretation leaves little doubt that secure attachment must be 'better ' than insecure. However what do those concepts really mean and what is their significance? Let’s start with the difference of these attachment styles.
The attachment theory suggests that the relationship infants have with their earliest caregivers (usually their mothers) the first two years shapes all their future relationships. Numerous research and studies in developmental psychology of infants show that the quality of infant attachment is vital in the shaping of our personality and how we deal with relationships. According to the attachment theory, infants communicate attachment behavior to get their mother’s attention or to be in her proximity. Attachment is one specific aspect of the relationship between a child and their caregiver having the purpose being to make a child feel safe, secure and protected. Secure attachment can be achieved by the caregiver quickly and consistently responding to the infant’s signals therefore they feel their needs are being met and fulfilled. If the infant’s needs are not met, the infant will most likely form an insecure attachment to his or her primary parent. As a result their life may prove to be more difficult and challenging in several areas. Insecure attachment in infancy does not automatically mean that the child doesn’t function normally, however studies show that there are some developmental patterns that seem to be typical of insecurely attached children. When a child is lacking a secure base in early childhood there is a chance that this may mean that during insecure attachment children may develop an avoidant attachment, ambivalent attachment, and or disorganized
