Should teachers in America get paid more?
One of the most debated topics in the American education system is the question of whether or not teachers should be paid more. Most school days in America start at 7:45 and end at 3:45— 40 hours a week like a typical work week. However there is much more required to teaching than just the 40 hours alone. On top of the normal 40 hours, teachers need to be at school before and after work hours to support students, attend meetings and get extra work and grading completed. The amount of work they put in does not reflect the money they see on their paycheck. Although there are arguably tougher jobs in America, teachers should get paid more than they currently do. The average student spends 40 hours a week with their teachers, often more time than they spend with their parents. In this time, teachers will teach their students life lessons, manners, and they even have the ability to give the student mental health advice, and increase their motivation to get work done and to be motivated for life in general. Teachers at school can be compared to a therapist to their students. If the student trusts them and feels comfortable with them, they could possibly tell their teacher important things about their life that not even family could hear. Their teacher may give them advice and talk about the issue with them. Since teachers are usually good at communicating with other people and students, they could be capable of giving the student advice to help them in their life. If a teacher is bad at speaking and not showing their step by step process, the student will not be as educated in the topic. Therefore, their students will not succeed in their job as much as they would when working with a teacher who knows how to help a student learn. If someone is working an office job with other adults, they will not understand what it is like having to teach every student the same way. Some kids will need extra attention due to different learning styles and techniques. Every human is different. Some students may have special needs, dyslexia, ADHD, tourettes, or autism. This will all hold a child back from learning on pace. According to ‘Dyslexia.yale’ around 20% of learners have dyslexia. Learning defects some children may have could take a teacher a longer time to explain, extra practice and overall, it requires patience. Some adults do not have that with children. Most parents are not even capable of teaching their child alone on mathematical equations. Imagine trying to teach classes at a time and have everyone in the class understand what is being taught and spoken about. A person may say something along the lines of “No one is forcing you to work a teaching job.” With that mindset and mentality, no one will want to become an educator, therefore the kids coming into elementary, middle school and high school will have lower levels of education
