At times we do not acknowledge social injustices surrounding us.We are so focused on ourselves that we refuse to understand what others are going through. There are social issues that can be seen on a daily basis on social media and local/international news. In most cases, we forget that injustices such as slavery are not ancient practices but continue to be practiced in many countries worldwide, even in the twenty-first century. Slavery occurs when one person has absolute power over the life, fortune and liberty of another. A slave is considered property and is usually deprived of most rights held by free people. Slavery has been a recurring issue throughout history, from the Biblical era of Moses to the three-hundred years African Americans were enslaved in North America. Victims of this cruel action are usually placed under inhumane,emotional and physical torment. Slavery has been the result of war and has also exterminated millions of beings. Debt bondage is a common form of slavery. Debt bondage occurs when a borrower (also known as a debtor) agrees to work for a lender to pay off a debt. What actually happens is that the work is given very low value or the work conditions and repayment are not male clear. As a result the debtor never pays off the debt and must continue working for the lender longer than intended. There is no written contract, the debtor does not know how much he or she has paid off, the rate of interest orthe repayment period. Debt bondage happens in places where very poor people do not have enough land to support themselves generally the lender is a landlord or a local business owner.
