Kendrah Lopez CS – 420 19 Sep. 2017 Structural Racism What is structural racism and how is it demonstrated/depicted in the film Stand and Deliver? Structural Racism in the United States is the conscious and unconscious effect on African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, and other races, because of racist beliefs and practices that have materialized in policies, rules, regulations, procedures, expectations, guidelines, strategies, practices, standards, and narratives. Not only does it lead to disadvantages for these populations, but at the same time it provides advantages, benefits, and privileges for White Americans. It is a system of opportunity for some and inequality for many. Structural Racism encompasses the entire system of white privilege in all aspects of society, including culture, politics, history, and economics. In the beginning of the movie, there is a meeting among teachers, faculty, and the principal in which they are having a discussion about how the school is in jeopardy of losing its accreditation, because of inadequate performance by the students. Instead of coming up with strategies to fix the situation and bring the school to compliance, some suggested that they should lower the standards for accreditation. This pertains to Structural Racism, because they automatically do not believe that the students are capable, because they are of low socioeconomic status and are students of color, thus are not smart enough to bring up their grades and attendance. They also discuss that the school does not have the adequate resources needed to make the necessary changes. However, I bet the predominantly white schools in the county have adequate resources available for their students. Which is another example of how Structural Racism provides opportunities for white
