Texting while Driving
The epidemic of texting while driving is a problem that many people don’t see as a big problem but the numbers show that many injuries and deaths are caused by texting while driving. Texting while driving continues to be a problem despite new laws and law enforcement campaigns. The easiest way to stop texting while driving is prevention and education.
Distracted Driving Consumer Reports (2001) explains that distractive driving can be anything that takes the drivers focus off of the road and that cell phone usage while driving has become a big concern. Distractive driving includes texting while driving. In an article written by Consumer Reports (2001) mentioned that even though new laws are in place without enforcement form police the laws do nothing to lessen the occurrences ofdriving while texting. One example of how enforcement would be beneficial was a pilot program in Syracuse, NY that reported a 68 percent decrease in texting while driving during a campaign against distracted driving called “Phone in one hand, ticket in the other” (Consumer Reports, 2001). This is a great way for the public to know that texting while driving will not be tolerated and that law enforcement will be enforcing the new laws. Many states have laws that ban the use of cell phones while driving, which includes using cell phones for texting.
