Probation is an alternative term offered by the court to an offender to serve beside going to prison. It has served an outlet to give back to the community for offenders and there are regulations and guidelines that the offender must follow. With supervision the offender is giving an opportunity to rehabilitate beyond the confinement of the prison and required to meet certain task during the rehabilitation process. “Probation the most frequent disposition for offenders and widely recognized for its advantages (Dawson, 1990)”. Probation effect on the prison overcrowding has been an advantage due to the decline for the cost of probation. Probation officers are now focused on which offenders met the criteria for early termination. This was a process of researching on different offenders to see who is low at risk, low-level felons or serve majority od their sentence. This was an result in decrease in cost in 2012 compared to 2011 by 2.5 percent. The less it cost to place an offender on probation there would be a chance in the decline in the prison population. The risk of community safety would be low because of the effectiveness by the probation officers probation process therefore the risk would decrease in prison. Like probation is an opportunity for offenders to t rehabilitate while working. The offender job would be to make he/she retain employment and follow the guidelines set if not returned to prison to serve the rest of the time until released. Work release is another alternative to create income and can have effect on the overcrowding of the prison population.
