Although the September 11th attacks did cause chaos and division directly after they occurred, the attacks led to a more militarily and culturally unified United States today. After the attacks, the nation was scared and confused as to how they occurred; the terrorists could have been anywhere and there was no set plan or idea of how to figure out who they were. Today, the culprits, Al Qaeda and ISIS, are well-known and our military is quickly figuring out how to deal with these terrorist organizations. Culturally, immigration and tourism to America was affected, as well as air travel, government, and even how American citizens saw their government and the world. Two months after the attacks, Congress federalized airport security by approving the Aviation and Transportation Security Act. The act introduced stricter guidelines on passenger and luggage screening and new machinery designed to scan for weapons or other similar items. As new threats became known, new procedures were put in place to counteract them, such as removing shoes or banning liquids. A September 11th fee was also introduced to airplane tickets, and it funded many changes within the airplane, with fortified cockpit doors and pilots now having the possibility of becoming federal flight deck officers, allowing them to carry a loaded gun and act as a federal officer. Congress introduced even more laws to hopefully prevent an event like 9/11 from happening again, with 48 bills being approved and almost 130 pieces of legislation being introduced.
