Being an athlete at Centennial High School and growing up surrounded by the athletic lifestyle has always been something that I am incredibly grateful to have been able to experience. For as long as I have been around, my dad has coached football, and whenever Centennial High School first opened its doors in 2010, he began coaching and teaching at the new high school. Being included in athletics and playing 4 years of Varsity football and track has passed on many positive values and sentiments that I truly could never repay. High School athletics has taught me the true value of teamwork and comradery, which not only carries over and helps in the classroom but is beneficial for every aspect of life. For example, football season is a very daunting part of the year. The season is not an easy time for anybody and at times it would feel like you were drowning, but there is an indescribable sense that it will all be okay because you were drowning together with your brothers. For somebody that has never played sports, it is easy to point out that sports are physically challenging, but what the majority of people don’t understand is that sports are about 10% physical toughness and 90% mental toughness. Having gone through 105 degrees August practices, to 25 degrees December practices, it would have been so easy to just hang the equipment up and say “I quit”, but what sports teach you is that quitting is not an option. When a task gets difficult, sports teach you that the only way to approach them is head-on and grind your way through it. I believe that in the classroom and work environment, sports have provided me with a tremendous advantage over others because my skin has been thickened and I am mentally tougher than others, thanks to
