Totem poles are wooden poles in which symbolic figures have been painted or carved into them. The symbols on totem poles can have an abundance of various meanings; the symbols on the totem pole I have created is a visual representation of events and parts of my life that had and have substantially impacted me. My first symbol, a baby deer, represents entering sixth grade. Transitioning from a fairly small school to a larger one and having more than one teacher and class was a drastic change for me. Additionally, the whole entire setting of middle school felt very unfamiliar to me; it took some time to get adjusted to the new atmosphere. To me, a baby deer represents naivety; I was quite naive in sixth grade.

Going into middle school, I noticed that I had all accelerated classes. This slightly overwhelmed me because I was aware that I would be given assignments that were at a more advanced level, and I would have to complete my work at a faster pace. Moreover, all of my life before middle school, I had been given the same exact work as my peers, and we all learned at the same pace, which is why this was such a drastic change to me. I chose this animal to represent this event in my life since chimpanzees are intelligent animals; therefore, in order to accomplish the work of accelerated classes, I would have to be intelligent, have a grand amount of effort, and have great work ethic. My fourth symbol, a colony of ants, symbolizes teamwork. I have been assigned more group work and group projects in middle school than elementary school. As a result of the abundant amount of group assignments I have been given, I have become less hesitant to express my ideas. I chose to represent this part of my life with an ant colony since ants need to work as a team in order to sustain their colony and get work done; this is the same as group projects and assignments because in order for assignments to get done efficiently, all people of the group must contribute and work
