Essential Health Clinic Reflection

This summer I had the opportunity to intern at Essential Health Clinic for six weeks, completing 120 hours for three credits. This internship has been very impactful and insightful. I have learned so much and really enjoyed the experience. I am really thankful for my time at Essential Health Clinic and this experience has helped me to gain professional skills. Internship has helped me grow as a student as a professional. During this essay I will review my goals form the first essay I wrote. One weakness that I did face was I believe I can be socially awkward sometimes. When I had to welcome people in the clinic I sometimes felt awkward, and I believe I need to work on my social skills. I need to learn how to be more comfortable talking to people I have never met before. Also, I did not really have to speak in front of a big group so I did not get to practice that skill much, I still had to introduce myself to groups of people, which was nerve-wracking. This internship made me get out of my comfort zone, which really helped me grow as a professional and an individual. There was one activity I found difficult because I am not a creative person. I had to create a flyer and I tried to be creative, but it was hard for me. Other than that I did not have troubles with the other projects because the projects did not involve too much creativity. I did not have trouble working with other staff at Essential Health, I liked every person I worked with. In my first paper, I made a somewhat correct assessment of the weaknesses I faced during my internship. I had to face the creativity and public speaking weakness. But in my first paper I mentioned me being impatient and being stressed out easily. I did not have troubles with me becoming impatient and frustrated. The second goal I wanted to accomplish was to overcome my fear of public speaking. I did not really have that many chances to work on that fear, so with more practice I hope to overcome the fear. Another goal I set for myself is I wanted to learn more about Human Sexuality and I believe I gained significant amounts of knowledge. I know way more about the different types of birth control, STD prevention, healthy communication, and so on. Before this internship I walked in with little knowledge and finishing this experience I have gained so much knowledge that I did not know before the experience. I gained knowledge through attending the outreach events and doing personal research. Another goal, was to help me determine if this was the right career path for me. I do not know if this goal was completely accomplished or not, because I really enjoyed my time at Essential Health, still a little unsure about my future plans. I worked on my communication skills, but there still needs work to be done. Also, I believe I did apply some principles and strategies I have learned in my classes. I applied communication and psychology principle and strategies to my internship experience.
