Academia: A Georgia Tech police officer is under investigation for fatally shooting a 21 year old student. Tyler Beck was the officer who shot Scout Schultz. According to the GBI, Scout called 911 about a man having a knife and a possible gun on the west side of campus (Staff, 2017). When the officers arrived Scout didn’t want to follow their demands which were to drop a utility tool that didn’t have the blade extended (Boone, 2017). It is also being reported that Scout was daring them to shoot him. There were four officers that had Scout surrounded and were demanding him to put the tool down. Scout instead move slightly towards them and this is when Officer Beck shot him fatally in the chest. Beck is on paid leave right now while everything is still under investigation. The Schultz family is saying that they should have just subdued scout and not take his life. …show more content…

It is not yet known if he will be receiving any sanctions. The reason his behavior is seen as unethical is because he was violating the use of force model used by officers. An officer should use the appropriate amount of force for the action. The most minimal amount of force that can be used is better. There were so many other weapons that Beck could have reached for to stop Scout. A Taser could have been used or even a pepper spray. The reason for this is because the knife on the utility tool was not drawn so there wasn’t any immediate danger. The violation occurred, in my opinion, because of lack of training and awareness on the issue of dealing with suicidal individuals and individuals with mental illnesses.
