In many American high-schools, it is a graduation requirement that a student must get 2 credits in a foreign language. Many think it may be irrelevant to learn a second language, but what we fail to realize is that we live in a giant melting pot. The United States of America is a country that consists of different types of ethnicities and cultures. Often when applying for jobs, an employer will ask if you are able to speak more than one language since all customers will not automatically speak English; especially here in South Florida. Although it can be very time consuming and difficult to learn, in the end it all pays off. Foreign language education is an important aspect that should be incorporated in any type of academic curriculum. If the opportunity is given to you and free of charge, why not take advantage of it? In high school, although you are only required to have 2 credits in a foreign language, you can always take extra classes. There are things like Florida Virtual School where you can take foreign language online for free, as long as you’re in high school. Knowing more than one foreign language can impact how we view the world, can help one become more socially diverse, and it can help improve one’s career.
