I’m currently working on an essay and have included two of the three rhetorical appeals Logos and Ethos. The main appeal is Logos, because There is a lot of information and facts. Ethos also, because there is authority that will help back up the claims. My audience is not directed to any individual group it is intended for everyone.
This advertisement utilizes the standard text format to capture the reader’s attention. The standard text format consists of a headline, body text, and creative image. The grand image of the watch and company logo captures the reader’s attention, and the text provides details of the brand and the model.
Ethos, Logos, Pathos, and The Challenger Reagan’s use of ethos, logos, and pathos condoles citizens across America. The President establishes his credibility and trustworthiness by sympathizing with the audience. At the beginning of the speech he states, “Nancy and I are pained to the core by the tragedy of the shuttle Challenger” (Reagan 1). He then creates a feeling of togetherness by saying, “We mourn their loss as a nation together” (Reagan 2). He achieves the purpose of ethos by sharing his feelings with everyone.
The genre that was created for the final project is the most powerful tool for communication that we have today, the website. Websites can be used for personal, commercial, government, news or educational purposes. One site is usually dedicated to once specific subject or purpose. There are many key elements that can be incorporated into the website like pictures, video, or links to other websites. This format was used for the fact that a website can be set up to provide the exact information that is needed in the presentation.
The rhetorical tradition is defined as the language that is being used to maintain social groups. It is the way that the speaker uses and manipulates language in order to persuade an audience. Rhetoric, in this context, is the skillful use of language and communication techniques to persuade, inform, entertain, or otherwise influence an audience. “They are tools for persuading others to a particular point of view and are often used in writing and advertising to sway the audience” (Park, 2022).
Writers do not share their opinions bluntly. Instead they ovoid their main points to be sure they will not offend the readers. If you believe something, state it. If you state it, prove it. Don’t ovoid the subject and
One of the major rhetorical strategies scrutinized when analyzing an article is ethos. Ethos are the things that make the author seem credible or trustworthy. It will not always just tell you right in the text if the author is credible. Sometimes a small amount of research needs to be done, almost as if having a background check done. We know instantly that he is a commentator for the New York Times.
Today many people are compelled to buy products due to advertising, not because they see a product and think “wow I need this now” but because they are persuaded into thinking that due to advertisement. Advertisement appeals to the three most basic urges of people: ethos, logos, and pathos. A company that exploits a person’s urge to buy is Downy. Downy uses their commercials to bring in huge amounts of profit annually by persuading their viewers to buy their product. The company Downy originated in 1961.
After the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, Lyndon B. Johnson become the 36th president of the United States. Johnson delivered a speech known as the “We Shall Overcome” speech which played a huge role in the voting rights for African Americans in the late 1960s. Throughout his speech, Johnson used ethos, pathos and logos to persuade his audience that all men are created equal and should be given a fair chance to vote. American was split during the 1960’s over the voting rights of African Americans. Before 1869 when the 15th amendment was passed, the only citizens allowed to vote in the United States were white men.
The use of Logos, Pathos and Ethos in writings is a way to persuade the reader, it is away to help the writer have better communication with his audience, mainly in speeches, text, advertisement and many others. Logos appeals to reason based on logic, this involves statistics and facts to help the writer support their claim, which makes it more believable, and it shows the writer has knowledge of the claim they are making which makes the reader believe what the writer is saying is valid and also true. For example if I stated that Taylor Swift was more popular in 2015 than her best friend Selena Gomez was because she had more followers than her and now she is not I should have the statistic to show that so that my audience believe it’s true.
I used an appeals to pathos, personification, anecdotes, and rhetorical questioning. Rhetorical questioning (Where is her big? Why are they not here? What has this little done to be alone? ) to let the reader know what was going through my mind.
In the essay “Where Anonymity Breeds Contempt” author Julie Zhuo points out that by revealing people’s identity; people can feel more familiar and be more humane when posting their comments and she notes, “At Facebook, where I’ve worked on the design of the public commenting widget, the approach is to try to replicate real-world social norms by emphasizing the human qualities of conversation. People’s faces, real names and brief biographies (John Doe from Lexington”) are placed next to their public comments to establish a baseline of responsibility” (89).The Zhuo’s approach seems reasonable and people can still have the opportunity to comment freely but aware that anything negative that can be considered trolling can be viewed by many people and can be easily identified. Other approaches that the author mentions like the moderator or rating people’s comments before being posted can be difficult to accomplish. Because everybody has different views about different topics, and when something is appropriate for some for others might be disrespectful. By exposing people’s identity obligates people to comment
Cognate Strategies are tools used to frame, express and represent a message to an audience. The word ‘cognate’ refers to knowledge and cognate strategies refer to techniques used to share knowledge with your audience. The three main categories of the strategies are logos, ethos and pathos, each of which has sub-strategies: Logos: clarity, conciseness, arrangement Ethos: credibility, expectation, reference Pathos: tone, emphasis, engagement Cognate Strategies are implemented by writers to better anticipate and serve their audience’s expectations by emphasizing key points, and by expressing and representing information in a way that supports the relationship between the source of the message and the receiver of the message.
Like the example of the #MeToo movement as described in the previous paragraph, I have seen anonymity have a positive impact when people have created Go fund Me’s, and petitions anonymously in order to help others in need for many reasons. I once came across an online petition where people can sign to make a change anonymously. This was a case in which they were petitioning to put someone in jail in order for someone to gain justice over a similar situation as the #MeToo movement. This shows that when people are given the option to make a change in the comfort of their own devices, they are more likely to do it anonymously for their own personal reasons. Although the article by truiloo.com describes an example of the negative impact of anonymity, I have not seen any negative aspects of anonymity.
We need the opportunity to escape the judgmental view of others; the reason being that we do have things to hide: feelings, opinions, beliefs, judgments, interests, etc. If not we wouldn’t have locks on our doors and we wouldn’t mind expressing our deepest feelings or eccentric opinions in public. When we are being watched we make decisions that conform to social norms and we are therefore not expressing our true identity. The Internet is intended to be a tool of liberation, where everyone is free to speak their mind and share with the entire world anonymously sans judgement, but mass surveillance is changing that. Because we act in a socially acceptable manner when being watched, mass surveillance is encaging our minds, crushing the freedom we used to exert, and coercing us into
