Throughout this paper evaluation of motivation from a Humanistic perspective will be examined.
Motivation is the drive within humans that makes us act, it is a process that influences goal directed behavior. Throughout our lives, we have certain drives within us that motivate us to behave and act in a certain way to fulfill our needs and desires. We have biological, social and emotional drives within us. Without motivation, we would not have the ability to take action and have the potential to achieve self-actualization.
The Humanistic approach was founded in the 1950s by American psychologists Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) and Carl Rogers (1902-1987). Humanism is a psychological perspective that focuses on the study of the whole person.

Sexual intimacy and the need for belonging. If these needs are not met it can cause isolation and possibly depression. Self esteem is the next level of needs and can only be achieved from earned self respect. We gain self worth and respect from engaging in constructive social activities. If these needs are not met the individual would feel inferior or insecure lack confidence. To proceed up the hierarchy, an individual must have the desire and motivation to fulfill their needs. Most people can function well in society even if some of their basic needs have not been achieved. Research as shown the Maslows principles of the hierarchy of needs is used as a motivational guide in today society. These principles are used in projects for the homeless. Beyond a basic intake, the first course of action would be to provide the homeless individual with food, water, clothing and rest. (Psychological needs.) After these basic needs are met discussions and plans are put in place for the person to take shelter in a hostel or safe place. This gives protection and fulfills the hierarchy of safety needs. Whilst staying in the shelter the individual may feel motivated to engage in a program that includes employment, education or addressing mental or physical health issues. Together they developed a new holistic approach to psychology and the “third force “ was founded. Humanism is an extension of behaviourism and psychoanalysis. The basis of Maslows theory of motivation was the psychological hierarchy of needs. Maslow’s hierarchy reflects a straight pattern of growth pictured in a direct pyramidal order of ascension. Physiological needs are linked to survival. These necessities include food, water, sex and sleep. Maslow believed after one need is met, the individual would then move onto the next level and will achieve self growth and improvement. Providing the physiological needs have been met then security needs must be met. This allows the individual to be free from danger, fear and anxiety.
