Introduction Hallelujah, I just won the lottery. There are three options for payment: receive one-hundred million dollars in cash today; or, receive twenty-five million in cash today and nine-million per year for 8 years, with the first payment due one year from today; or, fifteen million per year for 10 years, with the first payment due one year from today. This is a dream come true, however, before I start spending the money, I have a dilemma. My intention is to make an informed financial decision, based on how to create the most wealth for myself and my family.
Selling the lottery dream is possible because paradoxically, the probabilities of winning are so infinitesimal they become irrelevant. Jane. L. In his essay why we keep playing the lottery, Adam piore argues that the lottery is for entertainment, and the hope of possibly winning for the week. Mr. Piore puts ingrains the thought that people play the lottery for fun, hope, and to dream of what we would do if we win. He explains that the odds are so highly against us that our brains can not even compute that fact. Mr. Piore does a good job of expressing the fact that poor people spend more money than richer people on the lottery because of the hope of it changing their life if they win. He states the money earned off of the sale of the tickets go to the funding of public schools.
He begins his article by talking about the small chance people have in winning the lottery. Most of the article describes Piore’s interactions with Hargrove, the Lottery legend. He explains that Hargrove “built the state lotteries in Georgia and Florida from scratch” (Piore 700). He also talks about the legend’s expertise in the business of lottery and her “intuitive understanding of what drives her customers to play the game” (Piore 700). The author’s interaction with Hargrove gave him more insight and understanding of the tricks and logical manipulation of human brain in believing what is not factual.
In The Lottery, an entire town
The Lottery is a short story by Shirley Jackson that describes a small town’s “lottery.” In the story, paper slips are placed inside a roughed-up black box around the middle of the town. The kids are picking up rocks while adults are normally socializing. One could only assume that the lottery is a great event that everyone enjoys due to the jovial-like nature they exude. Later, after all the ballots have been counted for, everyone leaves.
The lottery is conducted by Mr. Summers, who manages several civic activities in the village. At this point, it is still not entirely clear what the lottery is or what the villages get from the lottery. The title is quite deceptive because it leads readers to believe there is some sort of prize or a game of chance, where the winner would receive some sort of prize or reward. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the lottery is not a game at all, but a ritual in which one member of the community is selected at random and then stoned to death by the other members.
In the lottery people are sacrificed each year in order to stop the decreasing of the villages crops. Some people might look at it as crucial and some might look at it as a fun tradition. The lottery takes place in a small village consisting of 300 people , The people in this village are rural and old fashion which is one of the reasons why they still haven’t got rid of this horrific ritual. This story gives off a somber and scary feeling to the reader. How is the lottery conducted?
Do you think to always follow the crowd is always a good idea? Following the crowd is very easy. Although it is not always a good idea. Following the crowd can be bad because, the crowd will make bad decisions every once and awhile and that could lead to very bad things. Like in the lottery following traditions without knowing what they are because it could lead to death.

Jackson uses several objects in order to convey the overall theme of mob mentality to the reader, such as stones, old man Warner, and the black box. The symbols build upon the story to solidify the theme that mob mentality can ruin a society. Many societies even today struggle with mob mentality especially communist societies. " The Lottery" is a prominent example of how history repeats itself.
“The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson is a very suspenseful, yet very shocking short story. This story is set in a small village, on a hot summers day in June. Flowers are blooming, and the towns people are gathering for the lottery, which is a tradition the town does every year. As the reader reads the first paragraph they think this is a happy story. The title also says, “The Lottery” which is a word often used for winning something or receiving a prize.
Through my research I have found an article on exactly that. Through Jennifer Hicks " Overview of "The Lottery", I found some conclusiveness to that statement. The main thing I believe is that the plot of the story is something that could happen in real life, as hicks said, "Take for instance the recent fascination with television talk shows. On these programs we learn more than we want to about dysfunctional families, dysfunctional individuals, murder and mayhem. Even our print media proclaims our atrocities toward one another each day on their front pages.
The characters’ behaviors don’t exactly scream “I love the lottery!” The most logical reason for doing something that makes them unhappy is they are doing it as a tradition. But why not break the tradition? After digging a little deeper, it is easy to see that the lottery has been going on for a long time: “There was a story that the present box had been made with some pieces of the box that had preceded it, the one that had been constructed when the first people settled down to make a village here (p. 16, lines 78-82).” Since the original black box was made when the village first settled, the lottery is an ancient tradition that is generations old.

I know that the lottery I am talking about is a different kind of lottery than what are thinking about. This is the kind of lottery where it is about life or death, it is a win or lost in this world.
