An attribute of society that has been constant throughout history is criminality, and due to the continuing effort to understand crime, this has resulted in the emergence of many schools of thought. In the 21st century, the world is continuing to see petrifying and outrageous murder cases, a recent one being the case of Canadian citizen Luka Magnotta, who murdered Lin Jun and recorded himself stabbing, dismembering, and performing acts of necrophilia on Jun, mailing his body parts to multiple places in Canada, including to Prime Minister Stephen Harper. After an analysis of the case of Luka Magnotta, when considering a psychological explanation, Magnotta’s criminality can be sufficiently explained through Eysenck’s theory of crime and personality,
The second similarity is how in both cases the fathers were ashamed of their daughters. In the video it shows Orion being ashamed of his daughter and as a result he says hurtful objects to her. One of them was he saying how a white woman will have a black child. In the book it shows how Mayella was a disappointment to Mr.Ewell. Mr. Ewell had beaten her up and told the town Tom had raped her.
Walter Dean Walters uses literary elements such as flashback, sensory details and characterization to demonstrate the theme of of bad the justice system can be. Walter Dean Myers uses flashbacks to show the theme. Steve goes back to when he got arrested. On page 124 the police said,”Some clown said that you were involved in the drug store stick up.”
One of the criminal thinking errors is the stance of “uniqueness”. This thinking error occurs when the person in question believes that they are different from everyone else, which leads to a sense of entitlement. Because of their supposed “uniqueness” they believe that the rules don’t apply to them, and they are entitled to have certain rights and actions that others wouldn’t have. A potential problem with this thinking errors is it can lead the person to suspect different treatment within the judicial system.
As I said before, one thing that carried through out the story was racism. A big issue during the trials was fear that they wouldn’t be fair and uphold justice. In both productions the lawyers doubted they would win the case. Another example of similarity is, the violence and harassment that the lawyers and their loved ones received from the community.
Deviance is defined as "any violation of norms, whether the infraction is as minor as driving over the speed limit, as serious as murder, or as humorous as Chagnon 's encounter with the Yanomamo" (Henslin 194). One statement that stuck out to me was sociologist Howard S. Becker 's definition of deviance: "It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant" (Henslin 194). One reaction that acts as a punishment for a deviant or minor criminal is the criminal justice system. On page 211 in our book, it is stated that "the working class and those below them pose a special threat to the power elite" (Henslin). As a result of this threat, the law and punishment comes down harder on the lower class than it does on the upper class.
The field of criminal justice needs theories to exist in the real world. The course Criminal Justice 325 helps future law enforcement agents understand why theory is needed and how to use them. Theories go through the steps of the criteria of theory evaluation to even become a theory. This is desired because if there are no guidelines theories would be all over the place. With theories about crime come crime itself.
The only similarity between the two is that a great wrong is done by each, yet how each character chooses to handle these wrongs is a testament to their character,
Strain Theory In accordance to experiencing strain or stress, people may become upset and sometimes engage in crime as a result to either cease or reduce the stress they are experiencing. “F*** the Police” is a powerful song produced in the late 90’s. The main issue that this song portrays is that African Americans growing up in urban communities are not treated equally by the law enforcement. The members of N.W.A. lived through the harsh life of the ghetto and experienced the struggles that young black males have growing up in the inner city of Compton, California. In the song, N.W.A. sends a deep message out about police brutality and says a lot about the society from where they came from in terms of race, class, norms, values, culture, and social influences. That being said, criminal justice has not always been the same and has been changing drastically. All the way back from the colonial times to present day. This research paper will cover the history that follows the criminal justice system and how exactly we 've gotten to where we are today within law enforcement. To start things off first we will look at the introduction into colonies starting from 1776 to present day.
Deviance and crime is a common characteristic of Canadian society. Deviance is defined as: “recognized violation of cultural norms” (2013, pg.465). While crime is defined as: “recognized violation of society’s formally enacted criminal law” (2013, pg.464). There are some universal similarities about what we as humans consider morally deviant, still, what is regarded as deviant or criminal behavior in Canada may not resonate with other societies. Some behavior “can fall right in between deviant and criminal” (Healy, 2012).
Criminal behaviour has always been an interest for psychologists, for they could never quite come to a conclusion between nature and nurture. Research concerning this topic has been organized for many years and due to the never ending debate, is still being conducted. I have decided to read and write about this myself, for I was genuinely curious about the matter and wanted to be a part of the research, as I felt responsible to do so. Social process theory depends on the interaction between individuals and society as an explanation and is also known as interactionist perspective. This theory assumes that everyone has the potential to violate the law and that criminality is not an innate human characteristic but is instead a belief that criminal behavior is learned by interaction with others (Schmalleger, 2012). Social process feels the socialization process that occurs because of group membership is the main way through which learning occurs (Schmalleger, 2012). Social process theory views criminality as people’s interactions with various organizations, institutions, and processes in society (Siegel, 2000).
