Teacher and Teacher Education. 24, 821-835. doi: 10.1016/j.tate.2007.08.004 This study examined teacher beliefs; first to determine whether the construct of academic optimism can be defined and measured as an individual teacher characteristic and second, the identification of sets of teacher beliefs and practices that could be good predictors of academic optimism. This study was conducted in Ohio with 3rd and/or 4th grade teachers and 351 teachers were randomly selected to participate in the study. According to the researchers, academic optimism is a “rich picture of human agency that explains teachers’ judgments in terms of cognitive and affective dimensions.” “Efficacy, trust, and academic emphasis are key elements in the general construct of academic optimism.
