Example Of Removing A Reinforcement

688 Words3 Pages

Introduction

In my paper I will be talking about extinction using 3 examples and discussing how it relates to the presence of removing a reinforcement. Extinction is the most effective way of eliminating the behaviors because it essentially forces a conditioned response without the use of a reinforcer or punishment for example, ignoring or redirecting (Miltenberger, 2016). Overall extinction is a key concept ABA which says the behavior occurs to serve a function. Extinction occurs when you remove the function (Miltenberger, 2016). The three examples that I will be talking about is a kid name John who shows SIB behavior, when he wants something. Another example is a boy name Joshua who shows aggression to escape work. Last, we have a kid name …show more content…

John uses SIB behavior such as, head banging when he wants something. First, we would have to find the function behind the behavior which is stop reinforcing John behavior when he shows SIB behavior. We could implement a behavior protocol that redirect and block John whenever he shows SIB behavior. We would most likely encounter an extinction burst because he would initially escalate in order to seek the reinforcer he is use to. Then he would see overtime that he could request what he wants without head banging. We could use a A-B-A-B design to test how effective the treatment plan is working. This proves that the presence or absence of the intervention directly impacts the target behavior (Miltenberger, …show more content…

Travon aggresses and elopes when he wants his legos or a fidget in his hand. The function behind Travon behaviors is to aggress to get the lego. In order to prevent Travon from eloping and aggressing we decided to put in a place a protocol where Travon can have the legos at all times but he has to put them away before he leaves to catch the bus. This protocol is an example of extinction in a different way. Instead of fighting, we prevented it all together by just giving him the legos. Now, we don’t see any aggressive behaviors or elopements.

Conclusion

To end this, my experiences at worked help me describe extinction and how it occurs when you remove the function of a behavior (Miltenberger, 2016). In my examples I tried to find the functional relationship between the target behavior and the treatment. The target behavior alters when an independent variable is influenced, while the other variables remain continuous and the treatment is duplicated or replicated more than once and the behavior changes every time (Miltenberger, 2016). In all three of my examples an A-B-A-B design would be put in
