Throughout history, there have been many examples of cruelty within society. Often times, this cruelty comes from fear, suspicion, and ignorance. Within the text “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, readers can see that fear can cause people to be cruel to each other. Likewise, the article “Japanese-Americans Internment Camps” supports cruelty caused by suspicion, and “A Brief History of the Salem Witch Trials” by Jess Blumberg demonstrates how ignorance can destroy a society.
History is a story of events that occurred. There are always different versions, different ways to see to same event. Each story can include different facts, lessons, and motives. Christopher Columbus’ voyage was a major point in history that leads to rapid development of the new world. His voyage opened up North America for colonization and leads to the successive globalization of the continents.
Trying To Look Honest by Hannah T. In the “trying to look tough” passage Holden is trying to be vulnerable with the reader, but he doesn’t know how to and he fears potential judgment. In The Crucible there are two characters who fully demonstrate this cruelty. In the beginning of the play, Abigail was being accused of witchery. Out of all the many classes I’ve taken so far, history is one my least favorite class. History incredibly uninteresting me, but in addition to that, American history textbooks, neglect to include what I believe to be very important details about history. Since history textbooks wish depict the United States as one of the greatest country in world, the authors try to leave out any information that might hurt Americas image. “Lies My Teacher Told Me” by James W. Loewen, tries to inform students of today, the important information that was hidden from them in their American history textbooks. Loewen does great with explain certain topics and unnecessary errors in the student’s American history education, throughout his book
Looking Beyond the Character Many times people have said that appearances can be deceiving, or that appearances are not what they seem. This can be proved true with the characters in a novel. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, she shows many examples of this in her writing. The story covers a few characters who the readers eventually get to see and know more about, who demonstrate a theme of how people are not always what they seem to be.
Just because Curley doesn’t have a wonderful life or always looking for his wife or even just because he likes to tease people he shouldn’t use cruelty against others just for his satisfaction and it’s okay for him. As well as Carlson who really wants to kill Candy’s dog just because he’s old and smelly. Cruelty shouldn’t just be used because it feels right for them. How can people be simply cruel? A character who I think is simply cruel in general is Curley since he is always complaining about everything and always asking around for his wife who is simply always disappearing.
Deception comes in many forms and can be seen in all kind of ways but mainly when someone purposely causes someone to believe something that isn 't true to gain a personal advantage. Many authors use this tactic in their plays books and other literary work like in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the author uses the technique of deception to mislead Claudius, Gertrude, himself, Ophelia and his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spare their feelings and to carry out a crime. Hamlet uses deception throughout the novel, but one way is to distract everyone from his true intention which is to gather information against Claudius to prove he killed his father. Shakespeare contributes all this back into his work by making each character in the play enact on some form of deceit to uncover the obscure truth.
A fallacy is defined as a mistake in an argument that arises from defective reasoning or the creation of an illusion that makes a bad argument appear good. In layman terms, Dictionary.com defines a fallacy as a deceptive, misleading or false notion, belief, etc. It is a misleading or unsound argument. Both inductive and deductive arguments may contain fallacies and if they do, they are usually uncogent or unsound. Fallacies are divided into two groups which are formal fallacy and informal fallacy.
