Theme
The theme we have favored to the greatest extent is bravery. We decided on bravery for many purposes, we felt that it was a substantial theme in the novel. There were tons of acts that demonstrated bravery throughout the story. Many characters in the story presented small acts of bravery. Mrs. Dubose displayed bravery by overcoming her addiction. She was aware that she was at the end of her life, she made Jem read to her until her alarm went off and she could get her hands on the Morphine. Atticus explained to Jem later on that the bravery Mrs. Dubose had, she was brave everyday to go by her own beliefs and to also fight such a strong addiction. During almost all of the story Boo is made out to be a creature-like person who eats squirrels and will take children at night. Jem, Scout and Dill are all equally terrified yet intrigued by the idea of meeting Boo. This is until the children get older, they start to realize how Maycomb is a twisted county, they understand that the reason why Boo never leaves his home is because he doesn’t want to. He knows how dirty the society is, he never wants to take part in it. Boo proves himself brave in the last few chapters of the novel. He noticed Scout and Jem were in trouble with Mr. Ewell. Knowing he couldn’t stand by and watch, he saved the children and brought them back to their home. Scout’s bravest moment follows shortly after they return to the Finch house. At their house she noticed a man standing in the corner. It does not take her long to recognize who he is. She knows she finally met Boo Radley. She kept calm when Boo asked “‘Will you take me home?’ He almost whispered it, in the voice of a child afraid of the dark. I put my foot on the top step and stopped.” Scout knew what she had to do, she was brave to take Boo home, and conquer her fear of meeting him. During the walk Scout started to realize something, she was seeing the neighborhood in a whole new perspective. Once the two reached Boo’s porch it hit Scout.
