Out of the few I mentioned I am going to focus on the jocks and the nerds. In Grant Penrod’s, “Anti-Intellectualism: Why We Hate the Smart Kids” he describes to the reader why the majority of people hate the “nerds” and “geeks” in school. Penrod begins his argument by using high school as an example. The idea of anti-intellectualism is most commonly introduced in high school when the classifications of “geek” and “nerd” are used for the people who take academics seriously, and unfortunately get excluded from social activities. At the Mountain View High School the students and workers only recognized the football team for making it to state. Even though the school’s academic decathlon, science bowl team, and speech and debate team made it to state as well.
Cliques are determined based on stereotypes, if you're black, then you're with the black clique, if you're a jock, then you go and hang out with the jocks. A few of the cliques in mean girls included Asian nerds, unfriendly black hotties, jocks, preps, and burnouts. Each clique had their own language, hobbies, and symbols. Janice and Damien taught Cady about all of their different cliques and as she was observing all of them in the lunch room, she was having a hard time understanding where she belonged. Growing up around African Americans, she assumed that the African American clique would be accepting of her, but when she approached them they treated her as part of their out-group and were unwelcoming.
Class Stereotypes Stereotypes are seen as overgeneralized ideas, images, or beliefs of a person based on a group of people. Stereotypes can either be taken or said in a negative or positive way but mostly seen in a negative way. Stereotypes are formed on a life experience, idea or a belief a person may have towards one person based on the person’s gender, race, religion or social class. The most common stereotypes are of the social classes which are the: upper, middle and lower class.
Two cliques/stereotyped groups in the novel are the cheerleaders and the Martha's. The cheerleaders are like the popular girls in schools today. When Melinda says “they are gorgeous, straight-teethed, long-legged, wrapped in designer fashions, and given sports cars on their sixteenth birthdays. Teachers smile at them and grade them on the curve. They know the first names of the staff.”
Throughout the movie we see the different groups in high school that relate to one another in a way that allows high school to function the way it
They are being given artificial praise that makes them feel extra special. It makes them believe that everything is always about them. They expect applause and they think they are entitled for getting an award even if they don’t deserve it. “According to Dr. Jean Twenge, the result of this constant praise has been a measurable increase in narcissism and a generation that has a deeply embedded sense of entitlement. However, we can see in the upper classes, some kind of model or a goal to reach. It is normal to aspire of a better life and to look like what is impossible to achieve or to denigrate what one really is. That is what George Orwell wants to say in his autobriography entitled The Road to Wigan Pier (Doc A2), “it is in fact very difficult to escape, culturally, from the class into which you have born.” We can then implement any strategy to avoid looking like ours. This is what George Orwell is trying to show us in these examples like the millionaire who wants to improve his speech but it doesn't change who he really is.
After reading the first chapter of Freakonomics, written by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, I realized not only what similarities sumo wrestlers and teachers have in common, but also to what lengths they will go to receive an incentive and/or achieve their goals. It details how some teachers and sumo wrestlers cheat for their advantages. In the beginning of the chapter the authors describe the concept of incentives, initially when I began reading I thought to my self “isn’t this chapter about sumo wrestlers and teachers?” Even though it is, the authors decided to take explain some terms and back-story before diving into what they wanted to get across, which in my opinion was executed beautifully.

I was shocked by how these girls could be so cruel to each other and others. They don’t realize that what they are doing is really hurting people. I’m not going to say that some girls aren’t like this in real life, because, unfortunately, some are.
Middle class would be Cady before she became a “Plastic” and low class would be Damian and Janis and the rest of the school. In the eyes of “The Plastics” everyone is low class and they are the only upper class. According to Jeff Manza, author of The Sociology Pproject 2.0: introducing the sociological imagination conflict theory is “a type of social theory that emerged out of dissatisfaction with structural functionalism and held that all societies are characterized by conflicts that arise from the uneven distribution of power and wealth between groups” (Manza, 2016). Bullies are not always at the top of the class chain but they often feel the need to put other lower them. Bullies often feel stronger and tougher when they are on top
Oscar Wilde revealed to his audience that the upper class have very strict attitudes towards social laws and constructs. Since they are the upper class, they are very snobbish and ignorant aristocrats who believe they should always be above everyone else. They strongly believe that only members of the same class should marry in order to maintain the social status quo. They disagree with education, even amongst themselves. This is because they believe that thinking, which is caused by being educated, leads to discontentment, which will in turn lead to social revolution.
Some peer groups can be good and some can be bad. The peer group that I was a part of in high school was bad. In high school I was always a little different and did not have many fiends because the clique or peer group in my high school used the Social Typing which is a “labeling process that begins when a person violates a norm. Negate sanctions are applied to norm violates in the form of criticisms, punishments, and/or labels.” They labeled me as a “dorky weird girl.”
It hit me hard when I saw the young high school student ridiculing the students passing by. It's hard for me to fathom that I've done the same thing, except their was someone videotaping her and she seemed to be totally fine with everything she was saying. I experience classism everyday, especially now that I am in high school. Kids in elementary and middle school are not the same as they are now. Not everyone at Chase high school is mean, and majority I would say are kind hearted people.
