The Cruelty of Othello It is easy to see in most texts, a conflict that involves some form of injustice or cruelty. But, in certain cases this cruelty become the entire plot of the story, as can be seen in Othello by William Shakespeare. In Othello, a story with lies, affairs, and murders the factor of cruelty is quite prevalent in almost every aspect of the story and is instrumental in the theme, trust your true friends and don't trust those that could hurt you. Through common backstabbing from friend’s and the knowledge each character posses the audience can see this theme in full swing. Perhaps the two most victimized people would be both Desdemona and, her husband, Othello. It is easy to see how Desdemona is victimized as her marriage is torn apart for petty reasons and she is killed by her husband due to a lie told by Othello’s so called friend. Desdemona, a devout wife through all controversy is made a victim through the lies of Iago. It is his cruelty that reveals Desdemona’s self confidence and how little it actually is. Although it is all lies told about Desdemona, when her judgement time comes she does not have the confidence to strongly deny this horrible acts. It is obvious that the reason for Desdemona’s death is Iago’s lies, but her death can also be attributed to her lack of denial. Othello is victimized in a similar way with Iago’s lies but in a much different way in terms that he has caused himself the pain. Iago’s trickery had gone so far as to force Othello to kill his innocent wife. Othello is not a victim in the story until he succumbed to Iago and actually committed the act of killing. It is at that moment, when Othello does this deed, the he is now without the person he loves forever, and there is nothing he can do about it.
