Fahrenheit 451 a dystopian novel full of social commentary and so much more, comparing reality in a commentary to our real problems as a society. In every example presented in this essay a clear picture of a dystopian society is painted. From Fahrenheit 451 to District 9 every author revealed major characteristics that all dystopian societies have. I main set of characteristics were common in every example which was propaganda and corruption which would lead to abuse of power. These types of books and films allows us to experience a society which is degrading and unfair and allow us to appreciate the still messed up society we live in now.
Bradbury’s stories follow a similar genre which is a dystopian feeling where the characters realize what the world has come to be (“Fahrenheit”). Fahrenheit 451, takes place in a dystopia or “... a dehumanizing environment… where the state keeps citizens in thrall be denying them the kinds of positive, useful intellectual stimuli found in books” (Huntington 107). A dystopia is a future where life is appalling. In their attempt to make a perfect future, the government instead created a dystopia where people are destroying their only sense of truth, joy and humanity (Hamblen). Bradbury is trying to convey that, “Dystopian novels show that any attempt at establishing utopia will only make matters much worse” (Dietz).

Bradbury successfully argues that an individual's ability to be physically and mentally active is destroyed as we are blinded with technology and pure knowledge in books are eliminated. Although his book is well supported through his creative use of figurative language, his failure to create suspense makes the resolution predictable. Montag the main character is a fireman whose life and thoughts change when he meets Clarisse, a intellectual teen, and witnesses a woman set ablaze for having books.
Therefore, if a text were to be chosen that encapsulates real world application and relevance in a modern society, that obvious choice is Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. At its inception midway through the 20th century, the novel was speculative fiction dealing in “what if” and “if only.” However, the world around us has developed in such a way to mirror the world Bradbury created. A supposed intent of the author in writing the text was to provide a warning, to prevent the real world from becoming like the one he created.

Through the use of futuristic technology, the lack of meaningful relationships with one another, and the acts of oppression by governments and other powerful organizations a light is shone on the possibly harmful future waiting for those living in this current contemporary society. This idea might be valid if humans are in a condition where they can not develop anymore but as long as humans still exist then we won't stop advancing. Humans went from writing on papers to texting on phones anytime and anywhere. Us humans would not stop our advancement because development and advancement needs to happen for humans to adapt and survive.
