In attempt to form a utopian society, a dystopian society can form instead. Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, is an example of a dystopian society that had been conceived as a utopia. A dystopia is a society that is considered unbearable, frightening, or oppressing. Our modern-day society, however, is very different from the community in The Giver. Our modern-day society is different from the dystopian society because we are able to choose our own jobs and spouse, feel emotions, and speak our mind. In The Giver, everyone is assigned their spouse, children, and job. Citizens have virtually no choice in the life they live.
